Assignment 10: Internship Update

I cannot believe it is already almost Halloween. That means I have been in my mentorship for three whole months already. It has flown by and I wanted to give an update of my internship.

At the beginning of my mentorship I was nervous because I wanted to be a help in the classroom, and I wanted to win over all the students. Now, I am confident when I walk in the classroom and I dive right in and help the students right away.

The time I have spent in the classroom has thrown me a few curve balls. I have noticed that some students will do their homework and classwork correctly and diligently and then when they get to an assessment, they do not do well. And then there are other students who do not do classwork or homework and then do extremely well on assignments. This has surprised me and has made me spend extra attention with each type of student in order to get them to achieve their goal of doing well in the class. This will hopefully be completed by the teamwork of both me and my mentor.

As with any job or internship, there is a routine, a rhythm. I have learned that children need a routine in the classroom so they know what to expect and can prepare themselves for their last class of the day. Many people might think that having such a routine would be boring, but I see it as being reliable. If the classroom can seem reliable for the students, they will have a safe space to further their education, and they will also associate reliability with their teacher and their student teacher, me.
