The reflection that follows is a continuation of my previous blog. This goes more in depth of my last step of my graphic organizer from last week.
Here is my analysis of my first source.
This article was about the flipped classroom approach and how it affected students’ learning. The design of the experiment tested both high achieving students as well as lower functioning students. Each group was given a pre-test before the experiment and a post-test after the conclusion of the experiment. Both tests had the same rigor of material, but they had different questions. For the experiment, the new flipped classroom style of teaching was implemented. This process includes students doing all of the notes and lessons by themselves outside of class by video lecture notes recorded by their instructor. They are free to watch it as many times they need as well as pause it when they need extra time on one section of the material. Then, when it came to actual class time, students collaborated on problems and looked at real world implementation of the students’ learning. After the class, there are review videos on the concepts covered in the prior video notes and in class. Students who needed extra help utilized these videos, and those students who felt confident in the material were not required to watch the reviews. Students reported that the flipped classroom approach allowed them to be more accountable for their own learning and they also felt they were able to go at their own speed, both faster and slower than usual class pace.
I will most likely use this source to help develop my essential question. This was a helpful source because it illuminated some of the practices and their benefits that my mentor is already using. Some of the most used techniques by her are youtube video lesson reviews with Khan style videoing. This also has a great experiment set up that I could use to conduct my own research in the future with my capstone.
